So in the comments to the frontpage story about track marshals someone brought up the Jules Bianchi crash. I was googling some information on it, since I wasn’t sure about all the circumstances and came across a video of it. I don’t remember this being discussed at the time, but the track marshal right next to the crash was waving a green flag.
Motorsport.com does a nice write up on why this was happening.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Who knows if that contributed to the crash or not, but I can’t believe that’s how the FIA protocols were written at the time.
It’s still sad to think about. RIP Jules.
Just so it’s not all doom and gloom in this post, have a fun F1 meme.

I remember watching this race live. The visibility was so bad from the spray that the announcers didn’t even really know what was happening. Hindsight is 20/20 but it’s incredible to think that they had a crane in such an obviously high risk run-off area without a SC (VSC wasn’t a thing until 2015). Having said that, I don’t know if a yellow sector coming into Dunlop would have helped...the drivers would still be doing 200kph into a long, flat-out sweeper in the rain. ANY off would be life threatening in those conditions if a tractor was your target.

This is an old article, but it seems that there are more SCs these days than there used to be. Hindsight is usually 20/20, but the FIA really should have had a SC out that day. The conditions were horrible.
RIP Jules.

Let us all enjoy the moment where Jules Bianchi passed Kimi Raikonnen who had tried to do a “Full Sutil” at Monaco but only did a “Half Sutil” and led to Bianchi’s first points in F1 . (Adri an Sutil’s signature Monaco pass was to divebomb you on the approach to Hotel)
Forza, Jules.

I can think of a couple more memorable dive-bomb passes in Hotel... Alonso, Ricciardo, Verstappen. Hmm, maybe they’re memorable because they were the ONLY passes at Monaco.

Sutil did it first. And did it several times
. Often just cause he could
Also, come on man give Sutil this ONE thing. He.....he kinda needs it. Sutil was one of the best of the average drivers in recent years. Co
nsistent points finisher, but not quite with enough speed to get podiums or a better ride. He did have the brass balls to do some moves when he had to, though.

I didn’t mean “more memorable”...I meant I can remember a few more. Since they’re renaming corners, lets just call it Sutil from now on. :)

Echos my thoughts on the front page about people rushing
to get the track back to green and cutting
dangerous corners
. Yeah we
want to
see racing but nobody is going to miss that extra 30 seconds to clear the scene properly and keep everyone safe
- run some
commercials now instead of during that epic pass
for 6th we were enjoying.
